To say that Apple innovates anything these days is disingenuous, at best.

What Apple does is define what is stylish and chic. This isn't a negative thing, however. Style is very important because a poorly designed product can be a pain to use and doesn't make us feel good about our purchases.

There are a host of innovators across the tech world, but Apple isn't one of them. If I want to find the next building material or breakthrough mechanism, I'm certainly not going to look at Apple.

On the other hand, if I want to find the one company that is going to take existing technology and make it stylish, sleek, easy to use, and generally fun to use, then I look squarely at Apple.

No matter how frustrated I become with some of Apple's choices (for example, why can't I have a matte mbp without a custom order like I could a few years ago?), I must admit that its products are always beautiful and much easier to use than others on the market.

That's really where Apple's strength lies. Other companies haven't figured out how to "un-techhead" their product lines.

Can you say just one company that seems to capture the needs/desires as Apple has?

I don'y see lines for the latest Droid phone or pad...

Like it or not of late; Apple knows how do things right...

We don't have to rely solely on a vendor's promise about how secure or optimized their code is because it's wide open for all to see. THAT is what OSS is all about.

I have to agree with OP. I paid �500 for my iPhone (i work for a UK mobile network so wanted to use my staff sim rather than get on a 18/24m contract) on launch and every day I have to deal with snide remarks from people I work with. One with a WP7 and one with a Palm Pre. They usually revert to the antenna or flash argument which have never been an issue for me.

It's always unprovoked and usually occurs when comparing an app with another iPhone user, to which they'll bulldoze in and start wittering on about Steve Jobs or calling me a "fanboy"...heh

Nothing you can do but accept this will always be the case when purchasing an Apple product as I got exactly the same kinds of retorts when using my MBP or even the little Magic Mouse...

Those who are gay and feel as if they've been wronged, I feel for them and effort to make it right, but the level of suffering by gay is nothing compared to what black people or women have endured over the centuries. I'll still address the point you make about the size of the Scandinavian market. The total population of the Scandinavian countries are 18.9 million. The total population of the USA is 296 million. The size of the Scandinavian market is only 6.4% of the size of the US market, but if Apple pulls out it's still lost income, potentially up to a couple of percent of what Apple makes in the US if you count loss of sales of music and the domino effect that will cause loss of sales of iPods and Macs.

Of course Apple can survive without the Scandinavian market, but why give up potential profit for nothing except stubbornness?

And people kept telling me that OSX and iOS weren't going to merge in any meaningful manner for years ahead, if ever. Yeah right. I'd bet the one after this has them nearly fully merged and I mean towards iOS for the most part. OSX will be dumbed down to the lowest common brain cell and you won't be able to get free/open software anymore. It'll have to come through the App Store or not at all. Wait and see. That is the point I'll be moving on.

This will happen eventually, but not just with Apple. All commercial OS's will go "closed". But not in 2-3 years, more like 10-15 or so. Your only chance for an open OS will be stuff like Linux then.

Anyway, I've already said too much. :)

True, but it's not like they're going to flip a switch, and suddenly all of the "red" on the Verizon coverage map (3G) is going to light up "purple" (or whatever color they use for 4G).

Verizon is going to be in the same boat AT&T is -- having to go out and touch each one of those towers... installing new equipment, upgrading backhaul circuits, etc.

Any new "G" coverage is going to start out spotty, and then roll out/fill in. If it's like prior rollouts, major population centers first, rural areas later.

I didn't say that opting in to the crowd sourced database affected your device, I'm saying that now that the tin-foil hat brigade have an option to completely disable this cached database file, _that_ could affect performance for things like Maps because it will have to calculate position from new data every time.

The only way to remove the cache after 4.3.3 will be to disable location services. They wont have poor location service performance, they will have none. :rolleyes:

Hm. I hate to say it but I'm preparing to be a little disappointed.

The shading of a button is about the most minor UI change I could think of, compared to the big changes I was expecting. As for the color schema, I thought i'd be glossy black... like imovie, fcp, etc... nice clean, high contrast, classy look, keeps your focus on your content.

But I guess I was expecting some next-generation stuff, like a semi-intelligent contextual version of Finder that'd closer integrate into applications, to put compatible files at your fingertips, & make the OS work with you, instead of be worked by you.

...Integration of cross-OS applications, like auto-syncable iWork, Garageband, iMovie projects, etc... so your content can be worked on seamlessly from one device to another & allow us to focus even more on our content & less on our tools.

There aren't exactly good public restroom options for a transgendered person. Yes, I have the Samsung 46" LN-S4696D (http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/LCDTV/LNS4696DXXAA.asp?page=Specifications), connected to both a Samsung BD player and a Core 2 Duo Media Center Edition mini-tower with a Quadro FX graphics card and HD tuners.

It does 1080p native, as well as native 1920x1080 on the PC.

Some of the Blu-ray Discs are simply amazing (House of Flying Daggers is superb), although others just make the shortcomings of the original production more apparent. (Kind of like a CD of an old live concert, where the CD perfectly reproduces the hiss and noise in the master tape.)

$4,000 for a TV? Quoting an commercial for Circuit City or Best Buy(?) when asking people about "HD", one of the answers was "Wicked expensive...."

yes, that would make it more expensive. in fact, what we're essentially talking about here is nothing more than a 'slate' tablet PC, which has been around forever. they're making a comeback thanks to the ipad, and i hope they will become the standard, for the higher end tablets anyways. they are more expensive than ipads, but they're actual computers that run full operating systems. they have touch and they have pen input.

that's a direction Apple should have gone in a long time ago. i hope, hope, hope they will go there in the future.

They've been around for a long time, and noone has bought them. And for good reason: they're awful. They try to do two things (touch and full OS), and the result is that they don't do either well (and that's being generous). And they're not making a comeback in any way. Companies that have traditionally made slates are ditching them for iPad-esque tablets.

Seriously, what is it with verizon?! They didn't want they iphone b/c it came with features out the box that Apple wasn't going to cripple so verizon could charge their premiums for it(V Cast my a**). Now with so many defectors heading to at&t they
see now what the consumer wants and will go where ever the best deal is. Like it or hate it the iphone is a freaking hit. Home run out the park. Balco juiced or au natural the darn thing is the s***!!!

The PDF reader I will say is something that MS should of put in the OS back in XP. Only reason it took this long was because of Adbobe and calling it copying Apple pure fanboyism.

Really I will say everything you posted is pretty much just really grasping at straws to call it copying. MS history thing (like Time Machine) I suggest you go look back at MS history and you will find MS been working on that a long time. It is more features from WinFS they have been wanting to Add.
Another reason it been held off on is that type of stuff does tend to eat up Hard drive space quickly.

I have to say this game kicks the crap out of Modern Warfare 2 which felt dull and boring in multiplayer mode. The maps are far more varied than in Modern Warfare 2 and much more interesting. The game modes are pretty good and the best thing about it is the customisation you can do. Plus the new leader boards are good for those of us who are pretty competitive.

Overall I'm much happier with this game than I ever was with Modern Warfare 2 which I only ever played FFA on and people always used to cheat by using Tactical Insertion to sit next to each other and get free kills.

I really like Black Ops, having stopped playing MW2 when the expensive DLC started, I haven't played it in awhile. From what I do remember though, I think the changed made to the game are a big plus.

1. Quick scoping is a thing of the past, so the days of watching players run around a map with a sniper rifle going for short range kills is suicide.

2. Sniping is actually a skill now. One hit kills take work with a sniper rifle like they should. In past CoD's anyone thought they were a sniper ( myself included who improved his K/D ratio dramatically once I realized how easy it is to snipe in MW2 over say a game like Halo ), now we often have snipers who need 2 - 4 hits to make a kill. It isn't like Medal of Honor where you spawn die, spawn die, etc. etc. You can actually get on the playing field, or even out run snipers shooting at you. Cool!

3. The over powered perks are gone, and dual wielding shotguns with assault rifle range as well. No using scavenger to spam noobtubes! Although I do miss being to replenish my claymores. It's a worthy tradeoff though. :p

4. Noob tubes less prevalent, and opening spawn salvos haven't been discovered yet.

The thing that does kill the game is the latency/lag issues, at times they are game breaking. Like previous CoDs you've seen killcams where it shows you not firing or stabbing your killer, when on your screen you did. Now though I've seen final kill cams where the killer didn't seem to hit his victim at all. Knife whiffing is a common practice. Which has brought back the wonky knifing range, allowing those with lightweight to run thru a hail of bullets and instant knife kill you.

If you're curious to test this... On the map Villa if someone shoots at you from the main Villa, into the small sniping room. Notice if it is assault rifle fire, after you run from the gunfire thru thru window to the stairs, you are still being hit from gun fire as your reach the steps. You won't die, but it's frustrating to say the least. So the days of seemingly being hit from gunfire around corners is still around, if not a little worse. There's is bullet penetration ( Hardened ), but it doesn't account for bullets that make it around corners.

Lately I've run into countless games where connection interrupted shows up at the end of games, and even during. Nothing makes you want to throw your controller than getting the drop on someone, connection interrupted shows up on your screen, and when the game starts again you've died. On the other person's screen nothing happened, it just shows you looking at them and NOT firing. On the Treyarch forums some have attributed this to the games bandwidth interpretation, there is a way to look at how the game sees your bandwidth. Seems for many it sees your connection as being very low.

I've taken to changing my search so it only sees 'Locale Only', which helps a little.

The tip about putting 'Rapid Fire' on your gun really helps out if you find yourself constantly getting the wrong end of the drop like I do.

About the footsteps issue, while you may not hear someone else, your own footsteps are almost deafening now. I take the Ninja perk just to NOT hear my own footsteps.

There is a spawn issue in the game, especially when the game 'spawn flips'. This is especially bad on Nuketown. If the bulk of the other team dies they will spawn on the opposite spawn. If you happen to be on that side waiting for the enemy to come, guess where they are coming from? That's right, ...look behind. At one point in every game this happens, and if you're there it becomes a maddening slaughterhouse.

The game has this weird thing where it will often spawn you in the vicinity of the person who last killed you. If they are on the move, this sometimes results into them literally running to where you spawn, giving them a cheap kill while you orient yourself. On the other hand, this does lead to one getting 'payback' kills more often.

I really do like the maps though, the sheer number of ( 14 )maps keeps repetition down. The amount of things going on while you are playing is cool, with the launching rocket shaking the bulk of the map, or the train shaking one end of the map, the target dummies moving about, or the underground areas increasing the size really makes them interesting.

Not a big fan of the single player, but I do like how it offers you a large assortment of the weapons so you can become familiar with them before multiplayer. The combat training is hilarious, naming bots after people on your friend's list. It isn't much help for playing online, but does allow you to try things out before spending money in the multiplayer.

A new update or patch will be welcome, and I look forward to playing the game despite it's problems. Good fun.

this is really the start of good things for apple.

if they really want to get more marketshare. Introduce more models.

ie
1- a midsized tower. to offer more power and upgradability than iMac or mac mini, and less than Mac Pro. This is part of reason why less desktop models are being sold than laptops.

2- Slim Macbook

3- iPhone (ipod phone/pda)

4- Embrace HDTV with new lines of HDTV compliant monitors (HDCP) and blu-ray or hd dvd & add hdcp compliant videocards also. Also sell HD content via itunes.

well after moving, i finally have my computers setup again. i just got internet access today, but it is looking terribly slow. i just started folding with 4 GPUs for right now. i'll see how this goes before i start with the big units

Technically my POWERMAC G4 can run iMovie, Keynote, and other mac software. RUNNING and FUNCTIONING (at a reasonable speed) are two totally different things. iPhoto takes a day to get going. I can't imagine aperture.

Anyway... I don't want to ruin anybody's happy day, but the reality is, if you don't have the latest and greatest Apple Machine, the current software runs pretty slow.

Go to the Apple store (yes, this means some of you will have to leave your apartment) and try running this software on a mac mini. Don't get depressed when it takes your entire lunch break to start the software. Forget about moving stacks of photos around and editing. As I mentioned... I had problems with the G5 QUAD and the original aperture at my Apple Store in Seattle. THEN AGAIN... they haven't updated half the things in the store. SLOPPY SLOPPY SLOPPY.

Just a thought.

I would ALSO have a lot of trouble with a G4 Quad.

Nevetheless, you can't say anything without actual thoughts, and not RANDOM ones. The G5 Quad you were using must have been misused by kids mucking around with it, not responsible users who take care of their machine.

I'm sure Aperture will run great on my Intel 1,66 Mini, with 2GB RAM

I just bought the 23 inch several days ago. My serial is 2A6251XXXXXX and it shows up with a june 2006 production date. Like the earlier poster, it is very bright and I also turned it down a little. I also turned the color down to Thousands instead of Millions as a psychological trick for when i need it. Now after reading the pink hue replies (which i totally forgot about) I can't tell if i have a pinkish hue or if its my own paranoia.

1. Does anyone have a pic or example of the Pinkish hue?

2. Is there a way to test or tell which 23" model you have?l

True, if at the bar in the country club among friends, or at a session of shooting skeet. I've taught a couple of doctors about guns, and freely admit to knowing them. Doctors can be okay people, although some are socially unacceptable IMO.

But otherwise it's exactly like asking someone how much money they have in the bank. You don't ask a farmer how many acres he owns--which is the same thing. Nor ask a rancher how many head of cattle he runs. Rude, discourteous and just plain ignorant.

Rude, discourteous and just plain ignorant is assaying pretty high-grade in today's society--but it's still stupidity at its finest.

A doctor has no way of knowing the circumstances of somebody's homelife--and since there are tens of millions of homes I submit that there is no "One size fits all" to allow some outsider's judgement. He is no expert on firearms use or safety, absent being a "gunny" himself.

It's nobody's business how much of what that I own or how much money I have. Ah, well, nothing's really new among idiots. Hank Williams sang about it over sixty years ago: "If you mind your own business, then you won't be minding mine; if you mind your own business you'll stay busy all the time."

That would be neat, rat- if any of the examples you gave were health hazards. They aren't. Guns can be. And your health is your doctor's business. My doctor asks me about all kinds of things I do and activities I engage in to give me advice regarding them. Health is your doctor's business.

Fewer guns would mean fewer guns for everybody.

Come to Chicago and see just what "fewer guns" has done for us. We've had a gun ban in place for a very long time- not working out so well.

iCal is awesome. Looks great; works great even in full screen mode.

The only issue is that in week view, the fonts are not properly anti-aliased.

I think Apple should have chosen Lucida Grande as a consistent font across the OS. iCal + Lucida Grande is much better than iCal + Helvetica which looks crap.

They need to get rid of Helvetica for Lion and other apps. PLEASE.

The Click Wheel interface was/is an abomination and exactly the opposite of a "good" interface. It's a horrible mess. The only usable iPod is the iPod Touch.

The click wheel interface was, in fact, a key element in the astounding (and that's putting it mildly) success of the iPod.

I thought everyone knew this already. :confused:



Apple used to innovate, right now they have acheived the goal of any capitalist company, they've hit the big time with the iPhone and are resting on their laurels.


In case you haven't noticed, they've redefined computing almost overnight. They're now building on that. They've got the competition completely flummoxed. They're pushing the industry forward with their apparent non-innovations.

There are some really good PC manufacturers and for some windows is a good fit. OSX has some great advantages over windows, but it also has some disadvantages. You pick the computer (and OS) that best fits your needs. I like the idea of building my own computer and I can pick exactly what components I want into the computer - that's another option. You can then run windows or OSX (or even Linux) depending on which you prefer.

The childish fanboyism the posted here does nothing to add to the dialog.

Their opinions aren't what bothers me. People are free to have whatever opinion they like. But when they constantly come into threads with no intention of discussing the topic at hand, only to remind us of what their opinion is for favorite brand, that is troublesome, and behavior that does NOT need defending. But hey, that's just MY opinion.
