For all the critiques against this march....
Remember, this march is for pushing lawmakers to 'take up comprehensive immigration reform'. This is not for granting immediate amnesty to undocumented/illegals.
If you are waiting for exclusive reform on H1B/EB3-I/EB2-I instant-green-card-welcoming kit, well, good luck in your shell for another 1000 years. Why not join hands with another group for a similar & bigger goal? Like I said in my initial post, there's nothing to lose... Consider it. Its a 'I scratch your back, you scratch my back' thing..
With a lot of media attention, they finally might take it up seriously before another year is wasted.
From Why March? May 1 March Reform Immigration For America (http://reformimmigrationforamerica.org/blog/why-march/) ..
Our broken immigration system hurts millions of families across America. It keeps workers under the exploitative heel of employers, pitting workers against each other when we could be united to move our economy forward. It keeps men, women, and children living in fear of raids, detainment, and deportation. Every day that our government doesnt pass immigration reform, the fabric of America is unraveled, and the American dream is deferred.
Our leaders promises are meaningless if they dont turn their rhetoric into concrete actions and legislation. President Obama, Congress, and the bureaucracy in Washington DC have not delivered the action America needs. Were marching on May 1st to show them, and the world, that were not going to let them get away with it.

Telling other people what lenses to buy (or not to buy) is often hard, for several reasons:
- You probably have a better idea what you want than I do.
- Before you posted here, you probably have made your mind up somewhat.
- My personal preference doesn't really match yours.
- etc, etc.
That's never stopped me from trying to tell people what to do, tho'! ;-)
Now, what lens you should buy depends VERY MUCH on what you want it to do. A 70-300 will be an "OK" lens, it's a budget version - but as you say, it's a lot of money to you, and telling you that you'd get a much better lens if you spend 3x or 5x the money will not really solve a problem.
The things you should consider, however, is if it's going to be good enough for the things you mention:
- Landscapes - a 70-300 lens is probably too long most of the time - your 18-55 is probably a better landscape lens.
- Portrait - Yes, certainly. It's a bit too small an aperture to be a GOOD portrait lens - you want something around f2.0-2.8 - but unless you buy a SPECIFIC lens for portraits, you'd probably not going to get there for anything but A LOT of money.
- Macro . The close-up distance is 5'/1.5m. Depending on the size of insects/flowers and type of photos you want to take, this may be fine or not close enough. However, it's pretty easy to simulate this in the shop, using for instance a coin some such instead of the flower/insect. So if you think that the smallest flower you'd ever want to get a real close-up of is the size of a quarter, lay a quarter on the floor, and try to take a picture of it with the 70-300 lens... Do you get close enough to fill most of the frame, or does it look like a bit lonely with lots of space around it? Can you accept it? Obviously, most insects are slightly smaller than a quarter - except for butterfly's.
There aren't many other options to replace the 70-300, that are reasonably low cost. I'm sure you could find some sigma or other non-Nikon brand lens that is less expensive and do roughly the same, with approximately the same result and the added risk that it's not quite as good at working together with the Nikon camera - at least if it's a Nikon camera and lens you can complain to ONE place and hopefully getting it fixed, rather than being stuck between two companies that neither will take responsibility for your equipment not working... [Although Sigma is more likely to fix a non-compatibility problem than Nikon, of course].
I just noticed that Nikon actually has three different lenses of roughly the same range, a 75-300/4.5-5.6, 70-300 4.0-5.6D ED and 70-300 4.0-5.6G - the latter is a lot cheaper and specifically designed for digital SLR (using smaller lens-elements since the sensor is smaller than the original 35mm film). Not sure if there's much optical different between them. ED should be slightly better optically (and you'd hope so for more than double the price!).
There are a few things that come to mind:
1. If you are SERIOUS about macro photography, you probably want to get a proper macro lens - they get MUCH closer to the subject. There's a Sigma 50/2.8 that costs about $300 which will be a good starting point. A poor mans version is "macro filters", which is basically a screw on lens that goes on the front of the filter screw of your usual lens. They are not quite as good optically, but at least allows you to get close enough to get the subject. The macro lens would also be good as a portrait lens, if you want to get a bigger aperture for that.
2. If you really want to do "big" landscapes, you may need some more wide-angle than the 18-55 gives you. That's obviously not NECESSARY, but for some scenery, it's hard to get far enough away from the subject with a longer lens. Unfortunately, there's really no substitute for dollars here, you'll have to pay for it or not get it, so no easy solution. A Sigma 12-24mm is $689, and that's obviously a lot of money... [Yes, you can get screw on wide-angle lenses too, but if the close-up ones are OK, these aren't - making wide-angle lenses is HARD - magnifying glasses aren't too difficult to make!]
3. You'll almost certainly need a tripod - both for landscapes and macro photography.
Finally: Whilst it's good to consider the purchase, waiting TOO long will make you miss oppurtunities of using the equipment.
Best of luck, and please feel free to ask further questions...

My wife got her H1b in 2007 and she was working for the company for 1 year and then she delivered in Oct 08 and since Oct 2008 she's on maternity leave. She was supposed to join back but because of the downturn her employer asked to extend the maternity leave and its an year almost. During this whole period her employer is ok and he has not removed her job. Is my wife is in status? I read on the web that the maternity leave is mutual as long as the employer and employee exists its ok. But my question is that is there a time limit on that. Also she's not getting paid for the full year when she was on maternity leave. The state remains the same now also. So what are right steps to do.....
Change to H4 till the employer asks to join back and then change to H1?
Please suggest
As other posted mentioned, 6 months is ok and justifiable because most of the companies allow mothers to bond with the kid. 1 year seems a stretch! I agree with gcformeornot and my2cents, if you are unable to justify and prove the employer-employee relationship then she is out of status.

Actually it was before July 30 that you could send it to either service center, but like I said earlier, with all the internal transfering that's going on, hopefully you'll be ok.
I found this link, please see and tell me what is your interpretation:
http://www.uscis.gov/files/pressrelease/UpdateDirectFiling062107.pdf
The effective date of the Direct Filing instructions for all of forms I-129F, I-131, I-140, I-360, I-485,
I-765 and I-907 is July 30, 2007, and coincides with the effective date of the fee increase for all immigration benefit applications and petitions. During the first 30 days of Direct Filing (July 30 to August 28), USCIS will not reject any form incorrectly filed at the prior filing location. However, applicant must include the correct fee and must meet all other requirements for a proper filing. Beginning on or after August 29, 2007, USCIS will reject any of the forms listed above that are filed with the incorrect filing location. Those rejected and returned forms will include the fee and instructions for proper filing.
Effective July 30, 2007.
Please share your opinion about this....I really want to make sure that I'm safe.
Thanks in advance.

I must correct the following facts for you.
- Last year FB to EB was 10K approx so this year the expectations are similar according to your attorney. All these numbers are distributed proportionately amongst all categories, refer demand data document.
- The confusion seems to in the administrative language, spillover means FB to EB.
I think you should read atleast a few pages or posts on the predictions calculations thread before being judgmental. The calculations have been done from all possible sources a) Inventory b) USCIS processing volumes and from large samples from other sites. If you have better sources with facts and figures please let us know. Somebody merely saying something will happen has no meaning. With regards accuracy said what is happening months back and many people believe that his predictions are accurate and very close to reality. I believe you should read atleast the post on page 1 it may clear many of your misconceptions.
Leave them ted, they will never understand

This is what i think as being optimist
Even if Schedule A gets 90 k unused visa, we will be closer to our PD as all schedule A are in EB3. So if this 90 k for schedule A gets approved we will move ahead by 90 k visas.
Even better will be if they have separate category and dont include in EB3.
I think if we are not supporting them then atleast not oppose them as in any case it will be a win win situation for us and we can follow their steps if they are successful to get some solution for our EB3 retro.
This is very serious matter. EB community should strongly oppose
It is time for Fight to Finish !

fulltime mba would have to be on F1 AFAIK. There is a detailed talk from attorney rajiv khanna's site about this. Please search on immigration.com
Hi All,
I am on H1 (beginning of my second 3 yr term on H1), EB2labor pending ( two US MS degrees in engineering) & I would like to apply for a full time MBA to NYU .
I would like to know if this is possible while being on H1. I know i can apply for a part time program.. but I would like to pursue a full time MBA or would I have to convert to a F1 ?..
How about pursuing a full time MBA with EAD ( 485 PENDING)
I would like to plan for a future scenario, as I would definitely want to pursue a MBA. Can you guys shed some light on this topic ?

Schumpeter: The other elephant | The Economist (http://www.economist.com/node/17414206)
When the US govt is ignoring the problems of legal immigration and making it harder and harder to immigrate (especially when the interest of foreign nationals to come here has subsided with unprecedented growth in their native country...) it is foolish to expect to lure skilled people to this country any more
yes agree.
I don't think they are even trying to get skilled immigrants anymore, but just temporarily get many people in their 20s to mid 30s. Hiring drops drastically after mid/late 40s here anyway. I guess the logic is also that anyone can be trained locally to become a skilled worker (hopefully)
current Immigration policy ends up getting mostly people who are familiar looking, friendly types, who keep up with the latest fads.
I guess it depends on what they feel is more important and makes them feel gooood, happy.
Good Media trick indeed,...infosys is giving money for this too???

Hi,
I just got approved for H-1B this year and I have some questions. I'm from a small country where they do not easily let their citizens to become citizens of other counties. So unless it's for educational purpose (undergraduate/graduate), they will not renew my passport for me.
My passport expires at the end of this year, and I was wondering if it's possible to obtain the following with an expired passport:
a) H-1B extension
b) PERM
c) green card
If it's not possible to obtain any of them with an expired passport, I must enroll in a graduate school to renew my passport. (Before my passport expires) I really prefer not to do this.
I would really appreciate if you could reply with cases you've seen or experienced in the past.
Thanks in advance.
I don't think you would be able to get through any of the list with the expired passport. If you are applying for it before your passport expires, I think you should be good.
By the way which country you are from?

FYI - last year I was current on August 1st and got my green card email on August 30th. There were plenty of people who did not get it that month and got it following month.
If I were you, I would what ever you think helps your case but looking at how things happend last year, I really dont think anything helped. But I did talk to my congressman and also created SR. I think, if you search for threads titled August 2010 approvals etc you will find everyone went through what you are all going through now.

First of all after applying H1 extension you have a 240 day window when you wont be out of status even if your H1 expired ( as long as the extension is applied when the current was Valid). My H expired on Jan 29th and i applied on Jan 9th and the last 5 months i worked as usual without Visa or I-94 ( but in Status) ...
Don't worry at all - if by chance anyone reaches near 8 month/240 day finish line which is highly unlikely, pump in extra 1000 bucks and upgrade that to a Premium H and you must hear a decision within 15 days....
There are tons of options - even if Premium doesn't work still there are 2 more options ( of course within legal boundary )...
I applied for my H-1 extension in mid April and my current H-1 is valid till mid August. After reading about the waiting times in the posts above I am wondering what happens if I don't get the approval until mid August. Will I be out of status ?
Thanks

Hey guys, can anyone help? Ive been disconnected from the site for a while due to personal reasons. Does anyone know approximately the following?
1- Approximate PERM processing times (from filing time) for EB2
2- Approximate I-485 and I-140 processing times from filing date for EB2
3- Approximate length of the entire process (from filing PERM to getting I-485 approved) for EB2
4- Are I-140 and I-485 still being filed concurrently?
I know there are trackers, but I find them all confusing!
Sorry for the many questions. This would help me a lot! Thanks in advice for any input guys!
(or send me a private message if easier, thanks!)
Hey jamie,
if any one knew this answers they will become immigration consultant trust me and will make big bucks.... USCIS has miraculous ways to function any thing can happen any time.......
